On a narrow terrace of the River Inn in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol,
20 km east of Innsbruck,
lies the 2000-strong village of Terfens.
This is the home of HUSSL Sitzmöbel GmbH,
where Peter Hussl and his sister Beate
are producing chairs
and tables.
Their father, Rudolf Hussl, set up
the company in 1976,
initially as an outside supplier.
From the very beginning, the firm
focussed on chair manufacture.
Peter Hussl started collaborating with
architects and designers in 1994. In many
cases, this was the beginning of long-term
partnerships - for example with arge2.
At the same time, the company
started development and marketing
its own range of products. HUSSL is
now firmly established in the field of
design-oriented furnishing.
The HUSSL brand stands for perfectionism
and top quality workmanship;
for standardised series production…
…and customer-oriented flexibility.
And for innovation!
Take the ST10, for example: a wooden
chair with a sprung back, possible thanks
to the structure of the filigree back legs.
This so-called sandwich technology is a
concept from the ski industry. Its origins are
clear, but it has nothing to do with Alpine
romanticism and everything to do with
technically intelligent design.
But the Alps are, of course, beautiful.
Just like the chairs.
